Science & Research

A classical Guggulu compound from the Sharangdhara Samhita centered on Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) — literally 'one that renews the body.' Punarnava's punarnavine alkaloid demonstrates significant natriuretic and diuretic activity without potassium wasting (unlike thiazide diuretics), making it particularly valuable in edematous conditions. Published studies show nephroprotective activity with preservation of glomerular filtration rate and reduction of BUN/creatinine in nephrotoxic models. Anti-inflammatory action occurs through inhibition of both COX and LOX pathways. Guggulu amplifies the anti-inflammatory and metabolic-clearing effects while Eranda (Castor) provides gentle aperient action. This is the first-line classical formula for shotha (edema), mutravahasrotas conditions (urinary system), and early-stage nephrotic presentations.

Clinical Key Functions

  • Dual COX/LOX anti-inflammatory pathway inhibition*
  • Shotha (edema) resolution through lymphatic and renal drainage*
  • Mutravahasrotas (urinary system) cleansing and tissue renewal*

Ayurvedic Philosophy

Punarnavadi Guggulu is the classical formula for Shotha (edema) and Mutra-Roga (urinary disorders). Punarnava, literally 'one that makes new again,' is the foremost Shothaghna (anti-edema) herb — the Charaka Samhita classifies it in both the Shothaghna and Kasahara Mahakashaya. In Ayurvedic pathology, Shotha arises from Kapha-Vata Samsarga vitiating Ambuvaha Srotas (water-carrying channels) and Mutravahasrotas (urinary channels), leading to fluid retention. Unlike harsh Rechana (purgative) approaches, Punarnava provides gentle Mutrala (diuretic) action that clears excess Kleda (fluid) while its Rasayana property prevents the tissue depletion that often accompanies diuresis. Guggulu's Lekhana amplifies the fluid-clearing action, and Eranda (Castor) provides Mridu Virechana (gentle purgation) supporting elimination.
