About This Herb

Punarnava literally means 'one that renews the body.' It is Ayurveda's most important herb for reducing swelling and supporting kidney function. Unlike pharmaceutical diuretics that deplete potassium, Punarnava helps remove excess fluid naturally while preserving essential minerals.

Where It Grows

Native to India and Brazil, found throughout India in Himalayan region up to 2000 meters altitude in more temperate areas. Found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide. Grows widely in India particularly during rainy season in moist, marshy areas, along riverbanks, in wetlands, grasslands, and wastelands throughout the Indian subcontinent.

The premier Shothaghna (anti-edema) and Mutrala (diuretic) herb. Its name 'Punarnava' means 'again(new' — referring to its ability to rejuvenate tissues. Classified as Rasayana for Mutra-vahasrotas (urinary system). Rasa: Tikta (Bitter), Madhura (Sweet), Kashaya (Astringent). Virya: Ushna (Heating). Vipaka: Katu (Pungent). Dosha: Pacifies Kapha and Vata.
