Science & Research
Standardized Boswellia serrata oleo-gum resin delivering concentrated pentacyclic triterpenic acids, principally AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid). AKBA is a potent, selective, non-redox inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), blocking the enzyme's active site and preventing leukotriene biosynthesis — a mechanism distinct from COX inhibition. Multiple randomized controlled trials demonstrate statistically significant improvements in WOMAC pain scores, physical function indices, and reduced need for rescue medication in osteoarthritis populations. Boswellic acids also inhibit human leukocyte elastase (HLE) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-3, MMP-9), providing cartilage matrix protection.
Clinical Key Functions
- Clinically validated WOMAC pain score reduction in OA patients*
- Non-gastropathic anti-inflammatory mechanism (no COX-1 inhibition)*
- TNF-α and IL-1β downregulation in joint tissue*

Ayurvedic Philosophy
Shallaki (Boswellia serrata) is one of the most important Niryasa (exudate/resin) medicines in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. It is classified in the Charaka Samhita among the Vedanasthapana Mahakashaya (pain-relieving group) — one of 50 fundamental therapeutic categories. The treatment approach for Sandhivata employs Shallaki as a Shothaghna (anti-inflammatory) and Sandhi-Balya (joint-strengthening) agent that addresses Vata-Kapha Samsarga (combined derangement) in the joint space. Unlike Ushna Virya (heating) anti-inflammatory herbs, Shallaki's Sheeta Virya (cooling potency) allows it to reduce Shotha without aggravating Pitta — making it suitable for Pitta-Vata joint conditions where heat and inflammation coexist.
