About This Herb

Vasa is the herb from which the modern cough medicine ingredient bromhexine was originally discovered. It is Ayurveda's most important respiratory herb, helping to open airways, thin mucus, and calm coughs. A true bridge between traditional wisdom and modern pharmacology.

Where It Grows

Native range includes Afghanistan, Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka), Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Indigenous to India, grows throughout Indian subcontinent and lower Himalayan ranges. 'S' morphotype confined to dry northwestern India; 'B' morphotype in wet tropics of southern India. Distributed throughout Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, and China.

Ayurvedic Profile

The foremost Kasahara (anti-cough) and Shwasahara (anti-asthma) herb. Vasa represents one of the most successful examples of reverse pharmacology — traditional use leading to modern drug discovery (bromhexine). Classified as Raktastambhana (hemostatic) and Kaphahara (Kapha-reducing). Rasa: Tikta (Bitter), Kashaya (Astringent). Virya: Sheeta (Cooling). Vipaka: Katu (Pungent). Dosha: Pacifies Kapha and Pitta.

Key Benefits

Bronchodilation, mucus thinning, cough relief, respiratory support, hemostatic
