About This Herb

Called 'Kesharaja' or 'ruler of hair' in Sanskrit, Bhringraj is best known for promoting thick, healthy hair and preventing premature graying. But this humble herb is also one of Ayurveda's most powerful liver protectors — supporting liver cell regeneration and healthy liver enzyme levels.

Where It Grows

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of India, particularly common in wet and marshy areas throughout the subcontinent. Also found in other tropical regions of Asia. Cultivated in India in moist regions and agricultural areas. Grows in warm tropical climates with moderate to high humidity and rainfall. Prefers moist, well-watered soils and is often found in disturbed areas, wetlands, and along water margins.

Ayurvedic Profile

A premier Keshya (hair-promoting) and Yakrit Uttejak (liver stimulant) herb. Bhringraj is one of the most important herbs for Bhrajaka Pitta (the sub-dosha governing skin and hair) and Ranjaka Pitta (the sub-dosha governing blood and liver). It is classified as Rasayana for both hair tissue (Kesha dhatu) and liver function. Rasa: Tikta (Bitter), Katu (Pungent). Virya: Ushna (Heating). Vipaka: Katu (Pungent). Dosha: Pacifies Kapha and Vata.

Key Benefits

Hair growth, liver protection, hepatocyte regeneration, premature graying prevention

Research & Studies

The following research highlights scientific validation of traditional uses:

Eclipta alba extract with potential for hair growth promoting activity

Authors: Hair growth research team
Journal: Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2009)

Laboratory research demonstrated methanol extract of Eclipta alba promotes hair growth by inducing anagen phase in telogen hair follicles, reducing hair growth initiation time by approximately 50%.

Clinical Evaluation of Standardized Bhringaraj (Eclipta alba) Extract Tablets in Hair Fall: A 24 Week Prospective Trial

Authors: Clinical hair research team
Journal: Journal of Ayurveda and Integrated Medical Sciences (2020)

24-week prospective clinical trial in adults aged 18-55 with increased hair shedding receiving standardized oral Eclipta alba extract demonstrated significant improvement in hair retention and reduction in hair fall.

Hair growth promoting activity of Eclipta alba in male albino rats

Authors: Dermatological research team
Journal: International Journal of Dermatology (2008)

Animal study showed hair growth initiation time was significantly reduced to half and complete hair growth time was substantially decreased compared to control animals with Eclipta alba extract treatment.

Molecular insights into the hair growth-promoting mechanisms of Eclipta alba

Authors: Molecular biology research team
Journal: Pharmacological Research (2025)

Recent molecular study revealed Eclipta alba extract increases proliferative activity of human dermal parilla cells by 45% and strengthens nuclear β-catenin signaling by 2.5-fold, explaining hair growth mechanism.

ECLIPTA ALBA (BHRINGRAJ): A PROMISING HEPATOPROTECTIVE AND HAIR GROWTH STIMULATING HERB

Authors: Hepatoprotective research team
Journal: Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research (2021)

Comprehensive review documenting both hepatoprotective properties and hair growth promotion mechanisms, noting clinical trials demonstrate frequent application raises follicular density by 20% and reduces hair loss by over 40%.
