About This Herb

In Ayurveda, honey is not merely a sweetener — it is a powerful medicine and a unique 'bioenhancer' that amplifies the effects of herbs it is combined with. Raw honey has natural antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties, and is the only sweet substance in Ayurveda that actually reduces Kapha.

Where It Grows

Produced globally by honeybee colonies wherever flowering plants and suitable climates exist. Major honey-producing regions include China, India, United States, Turkey, Argentina, and European countries. In India, extensively produced in diverse regions from plains to Himalayan foothills. Quality and composition vary based on local flora, climate, and season. Raw honey represents unheated, unpasteurized honey directly from beehives.

Ayurvedic Profile

Classified as the premier Yogavahi (bioenhancer) — a substance that enhances the delivery and potency of co-administered medicines without altering their properties. Uniquely, honey is Madhura (Sweet) yet Kapha-reducing, which is otherwise contradictory. Ayurveda strictly warns against heating honey above 40°C, as it is believed to become toxic (Ama-producing) when cooked. Rasa: Madhura (Sweet), Kashaya (Astringent). Virya: Ushna (Heating). Vipaka: Katu (Pungent). Dosha: Reduces Kapha; mildly increases Pitta.

Key Benefits

Bioenhancer, antimicrobial, immune support, wound healing, respiratory soothing
